Vice President Workgroup EMEA. | |
"I'm sure
you followed the conversations on the various forums on this topic. My view on
what is happening: Nokia tends to operate in markets where they are N°1. As you
know RIM and Sybase proceed them, making IntelliSync a small part of the overall
Nokia top and bottom line. Particularly as Nokia was running more and more
behind with the middleware 2.0 players who deliver slick interfaces for
application integration.
I
personally also believe Nokia is strategically "occupied" with competing on the
consumer market with the music and games competition (cfr. also their sell of
off their security department). And lastly, Nokia is competing with its partner
ecosystem by delivering application integration, file transfer, e-mail sync ...
software.
Hence,
all together, a next step in their "back to basics" strategy and as such not a
move that surprises me.
Other
vendors walk in the opposite direction and combine devices with software (RIM,
Palm, Motorola,..). An interesting battle and the future will tell what strategy
will be the best to penetrate the enterprise market.
What
does it mean for GW customers?
So
far... nothing! Nokia commits to support the solution 2 years beyond the end of
life. In the mean time, we are evaluating all possible options (and your input
is obviously welcome). Frankly, it is a matter of redirecting our energy and
resources put into Intellisync to the chosen alternative. This with the
following objectives in mind: (a) ensure 100% continuity, (b) use it as a hub
for innovation, in light of our UC strategy."
